My photographic journey began in 1982 when I picked up my first camera, a Yashica Electro 35, presented to me by my sister Martha Adhikari which was bought in Bahrain. Self-taught and driven, I embarked on a lifelong quest to capture moments in time through the lens. My early days as a photographer were spent in the town of Barisal, Bangladesh. Using my trusty Yashica, I delved into the world of film photography, capturing the essence of life in Bangladesh. It was a time of experimentation, where every roll of film held the promise of a new discovery.
In 1984, I made the move to Dhaka, where I continued my craft with the same camera and more affordable film. As I progressed in my photographic journey, I found myself yearning for greater creative possibilities. This led me to Japan, where I acquired a Minolta camera, a tool that expanded my creative horizons. Returning to Bangladesh in 1992, I sold the Minolta and invested in a Nikon FM2 along with two lenses. With this more advanced equipment, I continued to document life's moments in stunning detail.
In 1994, I furthered my passion for photography by studying at the 'Bangladesh Photography Society.' This marked a significant milestone in my journey as I refined my technical skills and artistic sensibilities. The year 1995 saw my work exhibited at the Indian High Commission Art Gallery, featuring Konica BPS Colour Photo Contest. It was a thrilling moment to have my photographs displayed in a gallery setting, sharing my vision with a wider audience. In 1997, I participated in my first solo photography exhibition in Dhaka, a testament to my growth as a photographer, named ‘HIS Creation’. That October, I had the privilege of presenting my work at a Regional Photo Exhibition hosted by AALOK at Drik Gallery in Dhaka. For many years, I served as a freelance photographer for various national newspapers and weekly magazines in Bangladesh, contributing both photographs and feature articles.
In 1999, I embarked on a new chapter, relocating to Sydney, Australia. There, I held two solo exhibitions in 2001, the first in Newtown and the second in Burwood Girls High School. These exhibitions allowed me to share my experiences and perspectives with the Australian audience. From 2003 to 2005, I worked part-time with the John Hadder Photography Agency, specialising in wedding photography, government wedding registration photography, and university graduation ceremonies.
In recent years, from 2021 to 2022, I organised a photography exhibition at the Ekush Academy Book Fair in Sydney, an event funded by the generous support of the organisation 'Pencil Australia.' This endeavour allowed me to showcase my work and connect with fellow photography enthusiasts and art lovers. Since then, I've continued my journey as a freelance photographer, capturing life's moments with the same passion and dedication that ignited my love for photography in 1981. My lens remains my trusted companion, preserving the beauty and significance of every fleeting moment in time.
